Verify the security code

Every one-to-one chat has its own security code. The code is made from your devices and the other person’s devices. If you both see the same code, your messages are encrypted only between your two sets of devices, and no one has come between you.

Verifying the code is optional. Your messages are encrypted even if you don’t verify; verifying lets you be sure the other person is really who they say and that the conversation isn’t going anywhere else.

See the code

  1. Open the one-to-one chat.
  2. Tap the person’s name at the top of the chat.
  3. Tap Encryption.

The 60-digit code appears in groups of five digits.

If you see No security code yet instead of a code, encrypted messaging with that person hasn’t started on this device yet. The code appears after you exchange messages.

Note: Security codes exist only in one-to-one chats. Groups don’t show a code.

Compare the code

  • If you’re together: Both of you open the code and look at the screens side by side.
  • If you’re apart: Read the code out loud on a phone call, or compare it another trusted way outside Flowsy.

If the codes match on both sides, your conversation is encrypted with no one in between.

If the codes are different, both of you close the window and open it again a little later; one of you may have added a new device and the code may not have updated yet. If the codes are still different, don’t share sensitive information in that chat and talk to the person another way.

What does “security code changed” mean?

You may see the line ’s security code changed in a chat. It appears when the other person’s devices change. For example, when the person:

  • links a new computer, browser or phone,
  • logs out of a linked device,
  • reinstalls Flowsy or moves to a new phone.

This is normal; your messages stay encrypted. When you link a new device, the other person sees the same line too.

If you didn’t expect the change or something seems off, open the code again and compare it with the person.
