Live translation in calls and meetings
Live translation lets people who speak different languages understand each other in the same call. Each participant picks their own listening language; what others say appears as captions in that language or is heard as translated audio.
It works in one-to-one calls, group calls, scheduled meetings and guest meeting links.
Note: Live translation must be turned on in your organization’s Flowsy installation. If it’s off, the panel says live translation is turned off on this installation.
Open the translation panel
- On your phone: During a call, tap Live translation in the More menu. The option appears after the other person joins the call. In a scheduled meeting room, tap the Live translation button.
- In the desktop app and Flowsy Web: Click the translation icon in the bottom bar of the call window. On the guest meeting screen, the button is called Translation.
While translation is on, a small dot appears on the button and the panel title shows Live translation · On.
Start and stop translation
Tap Start for everyone in the panel. Translation turns on for everyone in the call; to stop it, choose Stop translation.
Who can start and stop translation depends on the call:
| Call | Who can start it? |
|---|---|
| One-to-one call | Both people |
| Group call | The person who started the call and the group’s admins |
| Scheduled meeting | The meeting’s managers |
Guests can’t start or stop translation; they can only choose their own language and format. If translation hasn’t started yet, you can pick your language in advance; when a host starts translation, you’ll hear it in your language.
Choose your language
Each participant sets up their own options in the panel; your settings don’t affect anyone else.
- Listening language: Choose the language you want to follow the conversation in. If you don’t want translation, choose No translation (original audio).
- Format:
- Subtitles: What people say appears as text at the bottom of the screen.
- Voice: You hear the translated speech; the original voice of someone speaking another language is turned down.
- Both: Subtitles and translated voice.
- I speak: The language you speak. By default it’s the same as your listening language. Participants who pick another language hear you in theirs.
When you pick a listening language, the format switches to Subtitles automatically.
Captions
Captions appear at the bottom of the screen, up to three lines at a time. Each line starts with the speaker’s name; your own words are shown as You. Sentences that aren’t finished yet look faded and disappear after a few seconds.
Supported languages
Turkish, English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Arabic, Persian, Azerbaijani, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Hindi.
Privacy
- Captions and translated speech aren’t saved and can’t be viewed again after the call.
- The translation service doesn’t appear as a participant in the call.
Note: Machine translation can make mistakes. Confirm important points with the other person.
